Do you want to know how to eliminate the grocery bag at Kroger pick-up? It’s possible, and I will tell you how!
You must have heard that Kroger is eliminating the use of plastic bags by 2025 (you can get the full story here). I was really happy with the news but I wasn’t sure how it would work for grocery pick-ups.
Why I choose grocery pick-up.
I just love grocery pick-up because dragging two toddlers to the store is the least enjoyable part of parenthood, really! Also, I am always looking for ways to eliminate my household waste. Grocery bags are my list favorite things to collect in the pantry so, I set a goal to try and figure out how I could start eliminating grocery bags this weekend.
How to request “no bagging”
The process is currently not the easiest, but hopefully it will get better. I called Kroger and asked how I could request “no bagging” for my entire grocery order. They told me I would have to request “no bagging” for each item in my cart. I know, that might sounds like a lot of work, but it took me less than 2 minutes when I was reviewing the order and copied and pasted “no bagging” in the special instructions.
How it works in the back end
The Kroger employee explained to me that different people are responsible for “shopping” different sections of the store. So for example, the produce people wouldn’t know if you selected no bagging if you only added that request in for your meat products because another person would be collecting those for you. Hence, why you would need to request “no bagging” to every single item on your list.
The loading process
They collected all my items in their regular bins. It sounds like this is the process that takes the longest on their end as they have to load each item into my car instead of a few bags. However, the process didn’t take much longer than when I requested bags at all. I did get out of my car to help them load, and I had my reusable bags ready to be loaded in the trunk. In the past I noticed they only packed 1 to 2 items in each bag anyways, so I am not sure not having bags actually took any longer.
Produce items and meat are bagged to keep them protected.
Help make the process easier
It would be helpful to have just one click in selecting no bagging. So I submitted a feedback on their website, you can do so here if you would like to help me ask for a easier check-out process.
I am happy to not have a collection of bags that I would eventually have to take somewhere to recycle. The closest place to take my bags to be recycled is unfortunately Target, and we all know how a trip to Target goes. So, in the end, I save even more money on gas and on all the items I didn’t know I needed until I entered Target.
I am happy to be able to help them eliminate the grocery bag at Kroger pick-up! You too can start today!
